LDM Attorneys Support Habitat for Humanity’s Transfer on Death Deed Clinic
On September 19–20, 2025, Lamson Dugan & Murray attorneys Erin Artz and Callie Kanthack volunteered their time and expertise at the Transfer on Death Deed (TODD) Clinic hosted by Habitat for Humanity of Omaha. The clinic was held at the Village Empowerment Center on the Omaha Home for Boys Campus and provided no-cost legal assistance to local homeowners seeking to preserve and pass on their property through Transfer on Death Deeds.
Over the two-day clinic, approximately 80 individuals and couples received assistance preparing their deeds for filing. Erin and Callie supervised law students from Creighton University School of Law as they helped clients complete these important documents. Julie Abate, a legal assistant at LDM, also volunteered as the on-site notary for the clinic.
Transfer on Death Deeds allow property owners to designate a beneficiary who will receive their home upon death—bypassing the time, cost, and complexity of probate. This tool is especially valuable in promoting housing stability and generational wealth within underserved communities.
“This offers a way for community members to transfer generational wealth in the form of real estate while also avoiding the time and money associated with probate,” said Erin Artz. “The role of the attorneys and student volunteers is to help prepare the deeds but also advise the clients on the function and limits of the transfer on death deed so they are fully informed about its effect.”
LDM is proud to support access to justice initiatives and community-based legal education. By helping empower homeowners with the tools to protect what they’ve built, attorneys like Erin and Callie continue to demonstrate the firm’s commitment to service beyond the courtroom.
