Shelter in place orders abound throughout the country, yet construction continues to march on.  As we continue to deal with the impact of COVID-19, it’s important that you know whether your construction work is considered essential.  Your local government, state, county and city, may have established guidelines which will impact your operations.

For example, Nebraska has “requested” that everyone stay at home and social distance at work.  Construction projects are not shutdown. All construction workers, aside from social distancing, are business as usual.

Similarly, Iowa is allowing business as usual for construction projects, again with an emphasis on social distancing. But, as we have seen over the past week, as COVID-19 numbers increase, Iowa mayors are considering issuing shelter in place orders to limit exposure.

A review of Midwestern states reveals that most have a carve-out for construction related activities.  But, that could change in a moments notice.

As you continue to deal with the impact of COVID-19, it is imperative that you review your local jurisdiction to determine whether your construction work can continue.

For those of you working in Nebraska and Iowa, here are some links that will help you review your local COVID-19 orders.
